2017: The Year of No Rain

El Nino came to Cambodia and was merciless in its intensity and duration. On land there were villages throughout the country to which water needed to be trucked in by the military. On the Tonle Sap Lake lower water levels meant that less of the forest would be flooded, lessening the size of the “nursery” for the migrating fish which will lead to smaller fish yield is 2017.

A Doctor's Story

Looking to incorporate some “off the beaten path physical activity” into our three week adventure through Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia my husband and I enjoyed a guided kayak excursion of Tonle Sap. We kayaked through the colorful maze of stilted homes in the community of Kompong Khleang. We watched and waved at boats full of children who floated by us on their way to school.

It was refreshing sleeping in an room with air-conditioning and without the eardrum-tearing screaming of longboat engines. But in a way I also missed the communal feeling of people sleeping around me.

Monday and off to the lake clinic this time, not river. 6.15am journey begins, stethoscope on someone’s chest by 1pm. A five-hour drive and then a two-hour boat ride to our destination – an abandoned primary school.

Siem Reap 6.50am local time. Currently waiting for the cook to provide me some poached eggs on toast for three dollars. It is light out and cool. The few late mosquitos dot around trying to collect crimson juice from early human wakers.
